July 1st was the deadline for student-athletes to declare their intention to enter the transfer portal. Players are now able to transfer from one D1 school to another one time without being required to sit a year. As of July 1st more than 2,000 baseball players have declared their intention to play elsewhere next season. Of those, 15 players from the Niners’ roster have entered since the season ended. They are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Name | Position | Year | Destination |
Casey Bargo | RHP | SO | Ball State |
Thomas Caufield | INF | SO | |
Tyler Cotten | C | FR | George Mason |
Jake Curry | RHP | SO | Florida Southern |
Sam Grace | RHP | SO | Abilene Christian |
LuJames Groover | INF | FR | NC State |
Austin Marozas | RHP | SO | Missouri |
Dom Pilolli | OF | FR | NC State |
Chandler Riley | INF | FR | Gaston College |
Andrew Roach | RHP | JR | Oral Roberts |
Kolton Scherbenske | RHP | SO | Illinois State |
Parker Stinnett | OF | SO | Tennessee Wesleyan |
Tyson Tucker | RHP | SO | |
Jacob Whitley | C | JR | App. St. |
Zach Zedalis | RHP | SO | Gaston College |
The two names that will stand out the most to fans are LuJames Groover and Dom Pilolli. Groover hit .351 on his way to earning a spot on the C-USA All Freshman Team. Pilolli hit .327 in 46 career games for the Niners over the last 2 years. After a brief flirtation with an MLB contract last summer, look for Austin Marozas to get some looks in the upcoming draft. Otherwise he will look to play closer to home. Niner fans won’t soon forget the 3-2 fastball that he threw at Rice to clinch the C-USA regular season title. We would like to wish each of these young men the best as they move forward with their careers and thank them for their contributions to the program.
Next steps: the transfer portal is a fact of life in college sports now. Remember, the portal takes away but it also gives. It was about this time last year that we first started hearing names like Austin Knight, Jack Dragum, Will Butcher and Aaron McKeithan. With so many players in the portal looking for new homes, you can bet the Niners will be looking to land their share of it to compliment the signing class already in place.
Keep up with all the latest as the Niners look to reload via our recruiting page.
I could not be more excited for the next few years of Niners Baseball!!!
