We are currently in the thick of Summer Ball Season, where college baseball players hone their skills and get in front of scouts in summer leagues throughout the country. The Niners have several players in various different leagues this summer. Some teams are easy to find updates on and others are a little more difficult, so if we have missed something, feel free to reach out to us.
Below is an update on where the Niners are playing this summer and how they are doing (click on the player’s name to go to their stats page):
We will start out in the Cape Cod League. We believe this is the first summer we’ve had players up there since Reece Hampton played for Hyannis in 2017. The Niners have several players currently playing in the Cape this summer including Catcher Aaron McKeithan and LHP Spencer Giesting with the Harwich Mariners. Giesting has made one start and one relief appearance to this point and McKeithan has a homer in 6 games. Also in the Cape is Outfielder Jake Cunningham. He is batting .235 in 4 games with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Other Niners like Austin Knight, David McCabe, and Christian Lothes are listed on the Orleans roster but have not played in the Cape yet. We may see them after the upcoming draft.
A little closer to home, the Niners have several guys playing in the Coastal Plain League this summer. A pair of 49ers have come in to the summer red hot for the Forest City Owls. Will Butcher has continued to crush baseballs (see for yourself) this summer as he is batting .444 with 19 RBI and 3 HR in 18 games so far. Butcher was recently named CPL Hitter of the Week. Butcher’s teammate and incoming 49er, Cam Fisher is also on a tear this summer. Coming to Charlotte from Walters State, Fisher has already won a CPL Hitter of the Week honors while batting .412 with 12 RBI and 9 SBs in Forest City.
Jack Dragum is back with the Peninsula Pilots this season. You may remember last season that Dragum was named to the All-CPL Team as a Relief Pitcher. Well, he hasn’t seen the mound yet this summer, but he’s filling up the stat sheet at the plate, batting .316 with 14 RBI and 2 HR in 15 games so far. Outfielder Hunter Baker is also getting some work in for the Asheboro Copperheads in the CPL this summer, getting only 11 ABs so far.
In the Valley League, Nate Furman is batting .404 for the Winchester Royals. Over his 13 games for Winchester he has a Grand Slam, 11 RBI, 10 SB and has been named the ‘Straight Cash’ Player of the Game twice. Furman was recently named to the Valley League All-Star team.
Hale Sims, Dante DeFranco, and several incoming 49ers are getting some work in playing in the SCBL this summer. Sims and DeFranco are playing for the Mooresville Spinners. Incoming Freshmen Huck Wathan and Hayden Brandon are playing for Charlotte Alums Aaron Bray and BJ Hagan with the Carolina Vipers. Another incoming freshman, JD Suarez is playing for the Concord A’s this summer.
Out in the Northwoods League, incoming 49er Jakob Kouneski is playing for the Minnesota Mudpuppies this summer. Down in Florida incoming 49er Anthony Casciola (transfer from Bucknell) is pitching in the Collegiate League of The Palm Beaches for the Palm Beach Snow Birds.
That’s a wrap for our first Summer ball update of the summer. Stay up to date daily by following us on Twitter and please let us know if we missed anything.
Thanks for the update guys!
